Emmi Fondi, nee’Blaas, was born in Merano, Italy on October 7, 1932. Her husband, an Italian “Alpini” officer, was assigned to SETAF in November of 1973 and Mrs. Fondi immediately became deeply involved in all facets of the American Community in Vicenza. Within a few months she developed an excellent command of the English language. Her language proficiency, cheerful can-do attitude, willingness to help and many connections among the Italian populace enabled the American and the Italian Communities to interface in a number of exchange activities, such as cultural and charitable events of mutual interest.

Mrs. Fondi was very active with the Italian and American Red Cross Agencies. She volunteered as a ward assistant at the U.S. Army Hospital at Caserma Ederle, offering her services as an interpreter. Through her volunteer involvement in innumerable activities, she offered advice and help when needed and the warmth of friendship, thus helping to enhance the image of the American Community.

    • Pia Manetti Continuing Education Scholarship

Maria Pia Manetti, nee’ Chidini, was born in the Veneria “Reale,” province of Torino, Italy on December 4, 1920. She began her first volunteer work in Frankfurt, Germany where she was an active member of the Army Officers’ Wives Club and the American Red Cross (10th Army American Dispensary). In Vicenza, Mrs. Manetti volunteered as an interpreter and Fund Custodian for the Catholic Women of the Church (CWOC). In 1978 she began her work with the Vicenza Community Club (then the Officers’ Wives Club). She was a board member where she served as the Ways and Means Chairperson, Hospitality, and Club Historian. She always played an active part in acting as liaison for the Italian members of the club. She also worked with ACS and the Dandelion Boutique which sold local vendor crafts and raised money through commissions. Mrs. Manetti gave 32 years of Volunteerism to the Vicenza Community Club. She was a source of inspiration and continuity for our club and, as many would say, a “Pillar” of our post…always ready to answer a call for help.
